Aug. 15, 2006 — Nearly five years after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, racial profiling of airline travelers remains a divisive issue.

"I think it's time to end political correctness," said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y. "To me if a person is of Middle Eastern descent, it's legitimate for the screener to ask more questions."

Federal Air Marshall Spencer Pickard was suspended in June after he criticized the way the government handles air safety, specifically its reluctance to profile.

"Historically, young Middle Eastern males have committed the majority of the hijackings and the majority of the bombings," he said.

In light of the recent terror arrests in London, we spoke with some airline travelers about the use of racial profiling, including a man who said, "An old lady who's going to visit her grandkids isn't going to be strapped with bombs. But the likelihood of a Muslim person doing it is much more likely than a Christian person doing it right now."

Another person said, "I don't buy it at all. … You treat everyone equal and you move on."

According to a recent Gallup poll, 41 percent of Americans say Muslims should be subject to special security checks, while 57 percent disagree.

Granted that Pete King is an asshole, let's remember one thing: Islam is a religion, not a race. Anyone can be a Muslim.
