Women 'prefer tech to diamonds'

DIAMONDS are no longer a girl's best friend, according to a new US study that found three of four women would prefer a new plasma TV to a diamond necklace.
The survey, commissioned by US cable television's Oxygen Network, which is owned and operated by women, found the technology gender gap has virtually closed with the majority of women snapping up new technology and using it easily.
Women were found on average to own 6.6 technology devices while men own 6.9, and four out of every five women felt comfortable using technology, with 46 per cent doing their own computer trouble-shooting.
"People make the assumption that women are not as advanced as men when it comes to technology and I was surprised at the parity men and women now have in terms of technology," said Geraldine Laybourne, chairman and chief executive of Oxygen Network.
The Girls Gone Wired survey of 1400 women and 700 men aged 15 to 49, was conducted by market researcher TRU.
It found that given the choice, women would opt for tech items rather than luxury items like jewellery or holidays.

My 2c: I want both, and gals are pretty savvy as to whether a gift is for "her" or "really for him." As far as the whole Diamond Thing for an Engagement Ring goes: If I ever do get married, I would want a rock, but ONLY if it was from Canada or (better yet) an enviromentally-safe flawless vatgrown from Florida (and yes, vatgrowns are pretty much flawless and indistinguishable from "wild" diamonds--the only way to tell is to expose to UV light and turn the lights off; a wild diamond glows for about 2 seconds while a vatgrown glows for about 8 due to a more perfect crystal structure, which captures more UV energy).
Having said that, the two most useful, most appreciated tech gifts that I've gotten that I used the most are the iPod 4 gig Nano in black that Gilly got me (and I really do almost always have it on when I'm commuting) and the Zojirushi Rice Spaceship that my Dad and StepMom got me for Xmas. The PS2 that Gilly got me is also in very heavy rotation, I must admit.
Having said that, I love jewelry also, although I have to admit it's a harder call for a third-party buyer. Tech is easy; I have a wish list. Jewelry is much more of a personalized choice, like clothes in a way, and I understand if guys get stymied trying to shop for said item if it's anything but an engagement ring. The jewelry I wear the most are a pair of tiny diamond studs in a platnium ring that Mom got me for my birthday and an assortment of silver rings that I got myself over the years at various fine arts shows.
I think it's a matter of two differnet kinds of purchases. All that article says to me is that women are finally allowed to "like" tech toys as much as the boys, and don't necessarily swoon only for baubles.
In any event, communication and really knowing the recipient is very important in choosing either ornamentation or tech.
